Odds Movement United Kingdom: Today's Market Movers
Odds movement is the change between an opening line and the current price a bookmaker displays. When a selection shortens (odds drop), the market is taking money on it; when it drifts (odds lengthen), support is fading. Our market movers table tracks these shifts across UK-licensed operators so you can see which selections are best backed today and where the sharpest prices sit.
Across our sampled markets, Betfair posts the best price on 48.6% of selections at an average margin of 4.64% — the tightest book in the sample. Coral (27.1% best-price share, 5.66% margin) and Ladbrokes (20.2%, 5.88%) follow. Those numbers matter for movers: on a shortening favourite, the operator with the lowest margin usually holds value longest before the market fully corrects.
What is a market mover?
A market mover is any selection whose odds have moved materially from the opening line. Two categories dominate:
- Dropping odds (steamers): the price shortens as money arrives. A Premier League favourite moving from 2.10 to 1.80 signals concentrated backing.
- Drifters: the price lengthens as support dries up or team news turns negative.
Betting market movers are most informative when several independent bookmakers move the same selection the same way within a short window. A single operator shortening a horse-racing runner may just be balancing its book; the whole market moving together is a stronger signal of informed money.
How to read the movers table today
Each row shows the opening price, the current price and the direction and size of the move. Read it in three steps:
- Direction and magnitude: a drop from 3.50 to 2.75 is a larger implied-probability shift than 1.60 to 1.55, even though the second looks smaller numerically. Convert to implied probability (1 ÷ decimal odds) to compare fairly.
- Speed: fast moves close to kick-off, a race off, or a match start carry more information than slow drifts over several days.
- Consensus: check whether the same odds movers appear across bet365, William Hill, Ladbrokes and Betfair. Broad agreement is the 'best backed today' signal bettors watch for.
Because margin compresses the whole price ladder, always compare the movement against a low-margin book. A move looks sharper on a high-margin operator like LiveScore Bet (8.46% average margin) than on Betfair (4.64%) purely because of the overround baked in.
Where the value sits after a move
Once a selection has shortened, the question is which operator still offers the fairest price. Best-price share ranks who leads the market:
- Betfair — 48.6% best-price share, 4.64% margin (278 sampled markets)
- Coral — 27.1%, 5.66% margin (247)
- Ladbrokes — 20.2%, 5.88% margin (253)
- Sky Bet — 15.7%, 6.45% margin (242)
- Unibet — 15.2%, 5.89% margin (250)
- William Hill — 14.7%, 7.19% margin (266)
- BetMGM — 14.8%, 5.24% margin (122)
The implication for movers: if a favourite is being backed hard, the low-margin books (Betfair, BetMGM, Coral) will show the shortened price with the least additional overround, so they retain relative value even as the line corrects. Higher-margin operators such as Virgin Bet (8.30%) and BoyleSports (7.81%) tend to sit worse on the same selection.
Note on samples: 10bet (2.99% margin) and bet365 are drawn from small or partial samples (18 and 30 markets respectively), so treat their figures as indicative rather than settled. bet365 records a 0% best-price share in this sample — a function of sample size, not market quality.
Using movers with live and pre-match markets
Odds movement reads differently before and during an event. Pre-match, drops usually reflect team news, weather (relevant for horse racing and cricket) or weight of money. In-play, prices swing on the run of play, so a live shortening tells you the current game state more than informed opinion.
Operators with strong live capability — Betfair (8.7 rating), bet365 (9.4) and Unibet (8.4) — refresh in-play prices fastest, which matters if you are reacting to a live mover. For pre-match movers across football, tennis, darts and horse racing, cross-check the current line against our full odds pages before you take a price.
